Zeeland East (6-1-1) defeated Grand Haven (0-4) by a 5-4 score on August 25th, leaning on a sweep of the doubles matches to secure the dual meet. Grand Haven took all four singles flights, but Zeeland East answered by winning every doubles court. At No. 1 singles, Grand Haven’s Kyle Friggens (1-2) edged Daniel Steenwyk (0-8) 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the day’s opening singles battle. Tyler Sparks (1-2) followed with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-5 win over Gavin Sullivan (3-5) at No. 2 singles, and Reyer Thornell Timmer (1-3) came through in another three-setter at No. 3 singles by outlasting Andrew Colasanti (3-5) 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. The Chix lost the 4S battle as Oliver Reese lost a tough 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 battle to Jack Wilgenburg. Zeeland East’s best response came from the doubles lineup, starting with Jacob Guerriero (7-1) and Luke Hathaway (7-1), who held off Owen Spoelman (0-3) and Parker Cramblet (0-3) 7-6 (3), 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The rest of the lineup was even more decisive, as Jace Velderman and Payton Ott, Lukas Hafeman and Pierson Kolean, Ben Slotman and Max Lewis, and Carson Van Dyke and Dylan Mishler all added straight-set wins. The result moved Zeeland East further along in a strong start to the season.
