Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Jenison High School

The Chix took on Jenison High School Wednesday evening in a district semi-final game.  The Chix jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start the first quarter and led 14-8 after the first quarter.  The Chix extended their lead to 28-19 at halftime.  The Wildcats would not back down and they came storming back in the 3rd quarter, highlighted by a three-quarter court buzzer-beating shot, to trim the Chix lead to one point 37-36.  But the Chix responded in the fourth quarter, limiting Jenison to 4 points while scoring 15 to win the game 52-40. The Chix were led by a balanced attack.  Brandon Claerbaut scored 17 points, knocking down three 3-point shots in the game and added 3 assists and 2 block shots.  Ethan Houghtaling recorded a double-double, with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Luke Gruppen scored 10 points, while Nate Claerbaut scored 9 points, grabbed 6 boards with 2 block shots. The Chix record now stands at 16-6 on the season.  The next game is scheduled for Friday evening against Hudsonville at 7 pm at Holland High in the district final.

The Chix traveled to Grandville to play the Bulldogs in the opening round of the District playoffs.  The game was close throughout.  The Chix trailed 18-16 after the first quarter.  The Chix took the lead at halftime, 26-25 by playing stingy defense, only allowing nine 2nd quarter points.  Grandville hit two 3 point shots late in the third quarter to regain the lead 39-37 after 3 quarters.  The Chix regained the lead early in the fourth quarter and held on, knocking down 9 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to hang on for the win. The Chix were led by Luke Gruppen, who came off the bench to spark the Chix with 18 points.  Luke knocked down three 3-point shots and was 5 for 6 from the free-throw line.  Brandon Claerbaut scored 13 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.  Nathan Claerbaut was just shy of a triple-double, scoring 12 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked 8 shots.  Ethan Houghtaling scored 4 points, but ripped down 10 boards and dished out 4 assists. The Chix are back in action Wednesday night as they travel to Holland High School to play Jenison in the district semifinal.  The Chix will play the second game of the evening, with tip-off approximately at 7:30 pm.

Win: 68 - 38
The Chix traveled Greenville to take on the Yellow Jackets for their regular-season finale.  The Chix got off to a fast start behind the hot shooting of Brandon Claerbaut, who scored 14 first-quarter points to help the Chix take an 18-12 lead after the first quarter.  The Chix extended their lead in the 2nd quarter, taking a 34-25 lead to the half time break.  The Chix extended their lead in the 2nd half, limiting the Greenville to only 13 points, while the Chix scored another 34.  The Chix won the game 68-38. The Chix were led by Brandon Claerbaut, who scored a career-high 29 points, behind his 5 three-point shots.  Brandon also grabbed 6 rebounds.  Nathan Claerbaut added another double-double on the season, with 13 points, 11 reb, and 7 blocked shots.  Luke Gruppen scored 7 points, while Ethan Houghtaling scored 5 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. The Chix finish the regular season with a 14-6 record.  The Chix next game is a district playoff game on Monday, March 9 at 6 pm at Grandville against the Bulldogs.  Come to the game to support the Chix as they look to make a playoff run..

Win: 66 - 59
The Chix traveled to Holland to play the Holland High Dutch Friday night.  The Chix held Holland to 14 first-half points to lead 26-14 at halftime.  Holland's offense got going in the second half, but the Chix hit some key shots from the floor and knocked down 17 of 20 free throws in the second half to secure the 66-59 victory. Nate Claerbaut had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.  Brandon Claerbaut had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Luke Gruppen sparked the Chix in the 2nd half with 9 of his 11 points, while Ethan Houghtaling scored 7 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Chix closed out the OK Green conference portion of their schedule with an 8-4 record, good for 2nd place in the conference.  Overall, the Chix record is 13-6, and the Chix close out the regular season next Thursday, March 5 at Greenville to play the Yellow Jackets.  Varsity tips at approx 7 pm after the Freshmen and JV games.

Lose: 56 - 58
The Chix traveled to the Civic Center to play Holland Christian on Tuesday evening.  The game was close throughout and at the end of regulation, the score was tied at 50.  In OT, the Chix were outscored 8-6 and the Chix lose 58-56. The Chix were led in scoring by Brandon Claerbaut, who scored a career-high 24 points.  Brandon knocked down 4 three-point shots and also grabbed 5 rebounds.  Ethan Houghtaling scored 14 points, collected 6 rebounds and had 3 steals.  Davis Courtright scored 7 points, while Nate Claerbaut chipped in with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.  The Chix are back in action on Friday as they close out the OK Green portion of the schedule as they travel to Holland to play at the Holland High Dutch Dome.  The game time is approximately 7:30 pm after the girl's game is finished.

Win: 66 - 55
The Chix traveled to Covenant Christian to take on the Chargers in front of a packed house Friday night.  The Chix were down early 7-2, before finishing the first quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 12-9 lead.  The Chix would never trail again, outscoring the Chargers in every quarter and winning the hard-fought game 66-55.  The win raises the Chix record to 12-5 on the season. Playing without Trip Riemersma who is out with injury, the Chix used balanced scoring and a total team effort to pull out the win.  Nate Claerbaut scored 19 points, grabbed 8 boards and blocked 3 shots.  Brandon Claerbaut scored 13 points, grabbed 7 rebounds.  Ethan Houghtaling had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Luke Gruppen scored 10 points and dished out 4 assists.  Davis Courtright and Tommy Zegunis added 7 points each. The Chix next game is Tuesday night as they travel to the Civic Center to take on Holland Christian.  The varsity should tip-off around 7 pm after the Freshman and JV games are finished.

Win: 54 - 51
The Chix hosted Unity Christian in their final home game of the season.  The Chix jumped out to an early lead behind 5 Athey Dykehouse points.  Chix also played great defense and took a 17-6 after the first quarter.  The Crusaders slowly worked their way back into the game, chipping away at the Chix lead.  The Chix led by 10 points at halftime and 8 points after three quarters.  In the 4th quarter, the Chix led 52-51, with 7 seconds to play, but Brandon Claerbaut sunk two big free throws.  Unity had a chance to tie it, but their last-second shot missed, and the Chix held on to the 54-51 win. The Chix were led in scoring by Brandon Claerbaut, who scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists,  Nathan Claerbaut scored 14 points, with eight rebounds and three blocked shots.  Athey Dykehouse scored seven key first-half points and grabbed five boards. The Chix record is 11-5 overall, 7-3 in OK Green after the win.  The Chix head on the road for a non-conference game at Covenant Christian Friday night.  The boy's game tips about 7:30 after the girl's game is complete.

Lose: 46 - 55
The Chix were home on Friday night, hosting the Hamilton Hawkeyes for Senior night.  The Chix got off to a slow start, down 17-5 after the first quarter and were never able to recover, dropping a 55-46 decision to the Hawkeyes.  The Chix were led in scoring by Brandon Claerbaut, who scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed four rebounds.  Ethan Houghtaling scored 8 points, with nine rebounds and dished out three assists.  Trip Riemersma and Nate Claerbaut each chipped in with 7 points. A massive shout-out to the Chix Coop, who are finalists in the M.H.S.A.A. Battle of the fans.  The Coop brought high energy, enthusiasm, and creativity to the game and made for a great evening of basketball.  Thank you to the Zeeland High Pep band, who were in attendance at the game as well.  The music they played added to the great atmosphere on Friday night. A huge thank you to Jackie Kamps, who is retiring after 45 years of service as Zeeland East's official scorer.  Jackie's dedication to Zeeland's basketball programs is unmatched and greatly appreciated. The Chix are back home Tuesday night for their last home game of the year.  Come out early and watch the Freshmen, JV, and Varsity play as they host Unity Christian.

Win: 54 - 47
The Chix traveled to Byron Center Tuesday evening to take on the Bulldogs.  In a hard-fought defensive battle, the Chix pulled out 54-47 win in overtime.  The Chix led 23-16 at halftime and 35-27 after 3 quarters, but the Bulldogs turned up the pressure in the 4th quarter and outscored the Chix 15-7 to tie the game at 42 after regulation.  But in overtime, Brandon Claerbaut scored 9 big points to propel the Chix to the win. Leading the Chix in scoring for the game were Brandon Claerbaut and Trip Riemersma with 15 points each.  Brandon added 7 rebounds and 4 assists while Trip grabbed 9 rebounds and had a critical steal in overtime to help secure the win.  Ethan Houghtaling scored 8 points, grabbed 9 boards, dished out 4 assists and had 3 steals.  Adam Cassel scored 8 points, 6 points coming on 2 long 3 point shots. The win improves the Chix record to 10-4 on the season, 6 - 2 in the OK Green.  The Chix return home on Friday for a  big doubleheader of Varsity basketball action against Hamilton,  Girls tip at 6 pm and the boys follow at 7:30.  In between games, the Seniors will be honored.   The Coop will be in full force as they battle for the title of "Best Student Section" in Michigan.  It should be a great evening of high school basketball.  See you all there!

Lose: 49 - 69
The Chix traveled to Zeeland West to play the Dux in front of a capacity crowd Friday night.  The Dux jumped out to an 8-0 before the Chix scored their first basket.  The Chix continued to battle back and took a 20-18 lead midway through the 2nd quarter.  The Dux took a timeout and regrouped, knocking down back-to-back three-point shots to take a 30-26 lead at halftime.  The Dux took control of the game in the 3rd quarter, holding the Chix scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the quarter, to lead by 12 after 3 quarters and pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Chix 69-49. The Chix were led in scoring by Nathan Claerbaut, who scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.  Brandon Claerbaut added 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Trip Riemersma scored 8 points and Luke Gruppen chipped in with 7 points. The loss drops the Chix into 2nd place in the OK Green conference.  The Chix travel to Byron Center on Tuesday, February 11 for their next game.  Game time is approx 7 pm after the completion of the JV game.

Win: 86 - 62
The Chix hosted the Holland High Dutch on Friday evening and won 86-62.  The Chix started fast and led 19-11 after the first quarter and 39-20 at halftime.  The Chix extended their lead to 27 points after scoring 28 points in the 3rd quarter and cruised to the 86-62 victory. The Chix shot 60% from the field for the game, dishing out a season-high 25 assists on the game.  All 11 Chix players scored in the game, with 4 Chix players scoring in double digits.  Trip Riemersma scored 21 points while Brandon Claerbaut added 17 points.  Nate Claerbaut scored 16 points and Luke Gruppen added 13. The Chix overall record is 9-3, 5-1 in the OK Green conference, tied for first place in conference play,  The Chix begin the 2nd half of conference play on the road next Friday, Feb 7 at Zeeland West.  The game time is approx. 7:30 pm after the girl's varsity game.

Win: 59 - 50
The Chix were back home after 2 games away to take on the Holland Christian Maroons in OK Green action.  The Chix started off well taking an early 7-2 lead in the first few minutes of the game behind 5 quick points from Luke Gruppen.  The Chix led 15-11 after the first quarter.  The teams played even up in the 2nd quarter and the Chix led 26-22 at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter, the Maroons came battling back to tie the score at 40 and the score remained close throughout the 4th quarter.  With a minute left, the Chix led by just 1 point, 51-50.  The Maroons fouled Tommy Zegunis and he calmly knocked down 2 key free throws to give the Chix a 3 point lead.  The Chix defense held the rest of the game and the Chix made 6 of 7 free throws to end the game and come away with a 59-50 victory. The Chix were lead in scoring by Nate Claerbaut, who scored 20 points on a perfect 9 for 9 shooting from the field and 2 for 2 from the free-throw line.  He also grabbed 7 boards and blocked 3 shots.  Trip Riemersma scored 17 points, including 8 of 9 from the free-throw line and had 7 rebounds.  Brandon Claerbaut scored 12 points, and grabbed 8 boards and dished out 3 assists.  Luke Gruppen scored 8 points and Ethan Houghtaling grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. With the win, the Chix improve their overall record to 8-3, 4-1 in the OK Green.  The Chix are back in action Friday night as they host the Holland High Dutch.

The Chix traveled to Hudsonville Tuesday evening to take on defending Division 2 state champion, Unity Christian.  The Chix fell to Unity 68-45.  The loss drops the Chix record to 7-3 overall, 3-1 in OK Green conference play. The Chix were led in scoring by Trip Riemersma, who scored 17 points and grabbed 6 boards.  Nate Claerbaut added 8 points and Luke Gruppen chipped in with 7 points and 5 assists. The Chix are off Friday night and are back in action Tuesday evening, January 28, as the Holland Christian Maroons, come to Zeeland.  Tip-off is approx. 7 pm after the JV game is over.

Win: 80 - 72
The Chix traveled to Hamilton Friday night to take on the Hamilton Hawkeyes.  In a high scoring game, the Chix won 80 - 72.  The Chix led 18 to 9 after the first quarter and 38-32 at halftime.  Hamilton tied the score and took the lead midway through the 3rd quarter before the Chix caught fire and led by 9 after 3 quarters.  The Chix extended the lead to 19 points in the 4th quarter and cruised to the 8 point victory. The Chix were led by Trip Riemersma's 31 points on 12 of 16 shooting, including 3 three-point shots.  Nate Claerbaut added a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds.  Both Trip and Nate had career-high points scored in the game.  Brandon Claerbaut played another all-around game, with 12 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists and Ethan Houghtaling added 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Chix record now stands at 7-2 and 3-0 in the OK Green.  The Chix travel to Unity Christian Tuesday night, January 21, to battle for 1st place in the conference standings early in the season.  The game time is around  7 pm. A BIG Thank You goes out to the Coop and all the students who came to Hamilton to support the girls, and boys basketball teams tonight.  The energy and excitement the Coop brought to the game made for a great high school basketball experience.

The Chix were home on Tuesday evening as the Byron Center Bulldogs paid a visit to Zeeland.  The Chix played a strong game and won 62-47.  The Chix trailed 31-30 at halftime, but the Chix ratcheted up their defensive in the 2nd half.  The Chix out scored Byron 32-16 in the 2nd half and went on an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs. Overall, the Chix were efficient on offense.  The Chix shot 52% from the field and 79% from the free-throw line and committed only 11 turnovers.  Leading the Chix in scoring was Trip Riemersma, who scored 20 points and grabbed 6 boards.  Brandon Claerbaut scored 16 points on 6 for 6 shooting from the field.  Nate Claerbaut added 13 points and 6 block shots.  Ethan Houghtaling filled up the stats sheet with 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Chix head to the road Friday night as they travel to Hamilton to play the Hawkeyes.  Game time is around 7:30 pm after the girl's game.

The Chix opened OK Green conference play by hosting their neighbors Zeeland West Friday night in front of a big, energetic crowd, with the Coop and the Swamp out in full force supporting their teams.  The Chix jumped out early, taking a 3 point lead after the first quarter.  The Chix added to their lead in the second quarter, aided by an Adam Cassel 3 pointer at the halftime buzzer to lead by 7 at halftime 29-22.  The Chix kept the momentum going in the 3rd quarter, pushing their lead up to 16 points, punctuated by a Brandon Claerbaut dunk late in the quarter before the Dux mounted their comeback.  The Dux knocked down some big shots in the fourth quarter, including a 3 point shot to trim the Chix lead to 2 points with just under 6 seconds to play, but the Chix held on for a 49-47 win. The Chix were led in scoring by Brandon Claerbaut, who scored 12 of his 15 points in the 2nd half.  Brandon also added 5 assists.  Adam Cassel had a huge first-half scoring all of his 9 points on for the game on 3 three-point shots.  Adam also added 2 steals and played great defense.  Nate Claerbaut scored 9 points and grabbed 7 boards, Trip Riemersma had 6 points and 5 rebounds and Ethan Houghtaling and Davis Courtright each chipped in with 5 points. The Chix have an overall record of 5-2, with a 1-0 record in the OK Green.  The Chix are back in action Tuesday night as they host Byron Center.  Game time will be around 7 pm, right after the JV game.

The Chix took to the road tonight to play Mona Shores for their first road game of the season and came away with a 66 to 50 victory.  The Chix got off to a fast start, knocking down 7 of 10 shots in the first quarter, to take a 19 -10 lead.  The Chix kept up their hot shooting int he second quarter to lead by 10 at halftime, 38 to 28.  In the third quarter, the Sailors closed the gap to 5 points, but the Chix responded late in the quarter to extend the lead to 13 points, 50 to 37.  The Chix pulled away in the fourth quarter to win by 16 points. For the game, the Chix shot 62% from the field and had 19 assists.  The team also featured a balanced scoring attack.  Trip Riemersma scored 15 points and grabbed 5 boards, while Nate Claerbaut scored 15 points, with 9 block shots.  Davis Courtright came off the bench to score 12 points on 4 for 4 shooting, including two 3-point shots.  Brandon Claerbaut had 11 points, 8 boards, 6 assists, while Luke Gruppen chipped in with 9 points and 4 boards. The Chix improve to 4-2 on the season as they start OK Green conference play.  The Chix take on their cross-path rivals Zeeland West on Friday night at home for a full evening of basketball action.  It starts with the Unified game at 4:30 pm.  The girls take to the court at 6 pm and the boys follow the girls at 7:30 pm.  Come out for a great night of basketball and supporting all of our Zeeland students.

The Chix were back in action Saturday night in the Zeeland East Holiday tournament final playing the Ludington Orioles.  The first quarter went back and forth, but the Chix scored the last 5 points of the quarter to lead 17-13.  The Chix scored the first points of the 2nd quarter and led by 9, 22-13.  The Orioles continued to battle and ended the 2nd quarter on 12-3 run to lead 33-31 at halftime.  Ludington made eight three-point shots in the first half. The second half was hard-fought by both teams.  Ludington took a 9 point lead late in the third quarter before Luke Gruppen hit a 3 point shot to close the gap at 6 points after the 3rd quarter.  The Chix continued to battle, and got the deficit down to 2 points late in the game, but were not able to take the lead, and the Chix fell 57-53. Trip Riemersma scored 22 points.  Nate Claerbaut added 15 points while Brandon Claerbaut added 5 points, six rebounds, and six assists.   Trip Riemersma and Nate Claerbaut were named to the all-tournament team. The Chix take their 3 and 2 record on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Mona Shores on Tuesday, January 7.
Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Grant High School

The Chix returned to action Friday night as they hosted the Grant Tigers as part of the Zeeland East Holiday Tournament.  The Chix played a strong game and won 78-37.  The Chix jumped out early to lead 20-9 after the first quarter.  The Chix extended their lead to 12, leading 37-25 at halftime.  The Chix continued their strong play in the second half, outscoring Grant 41-12.  For the game, the Chix shot 54% from the field, dished out 22 assists and committed only 6 turnovers. Leading the team in scoring was Trip Riemersma, who had 2 big dunks as part of his 20 points.  Brandon Claerbaut filled up the stats sheet with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, and 3 assists.  Nathan Claerbaut had his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 boards, along with 5 blocked shots.  Tommy Zegunis added 10 points, along with playing some great defense, and Luke Gruppen had 8 points and 7 assists. The Chix are back in action Saturday night as they host Ludington in the tournament final around 7:30 pm.  The game will follow the consolation final between Grant and West Catholic, which starts at 6 pm.  Come out and cheer on your Chix!    
Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Thornapple Kellogg High School

Win: 74 - 52
The Chix hosted Thorn-apple Kellogg Friday night in front of a festive and rowdy Christmas crowd.  The Chix didn't disappoint and came away with a 74-52 win.  The Chix trailed after the first quarter 13 -10 and were down 21-15 midway through the 2nd quarter when they caught fire.  The Chix went on a 20-1 run to finish the 2nd quarter, punctuated by a Nate Claerbaut dunk and the Chix lead 35-22 at the half.  In a foul-filled 2nd half, the Chix lead by double digits most of the way and pulled away late to secure the victory. Trip Riemersma led the team in scoring with 20 points and 5 rebounds.  Nathan Claerbaut added 14 points, 11 boards, and 6 block shots.  Davis Courtright scored 11 points, going 9 of 10 from the free-throw line and Brandon Claerbaut added 10 points and 3 assists.  Athey Dykehouse chipped in with 4 points and 5 rebounds. The Chix are now 2 -1 on the season.  The Chix are back in action on Friday, December 27 at 7;30 as they host Grant as part of the Zeeland East Holiday Tournament.   Hope to see you back!
Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Jenison High School

Win: 65 - 50
The Chix hosted Jenison tonight and came away with a 65 -50 win, leveling their record at 1 and 1.  This was the first win for Coach Carlson as Zeeland East’s Varsity Basketball coach.  The Chix took the lead early and led 11 to 10 after the first quarter.  Jenison took a 3 point lead early in the 2nd quarter, but the Chix went on a 19 to 4 run to end the first half to take control of the game, leading 32 to 19 at halftime.  The Chix extended their lead to 20 points in the 3rd quarter and after Jenison closed to lead late in the 4th quarter  to 11 points, the Chix went 6 for 6 from the free throw line to secure the win.    The Chix were lead by the inside-outside combination of Trip Riemersma and Nate Claerbaut.  Riemersma scored 19 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, while going 8 for 8 from the free throw line.  Nate Claerbaut scored 19 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and 3 blocking shots.  Brandon Claerbaut added 7 points, while Ethan Houghtaling added 6 points and 9 boards.    The Chix are back in action Friday night at home hosting Thornapple-Kellogg.  The Varsity Girls play at 6 pm and the Boys follow with tipoff around 7:30 pm.  Come support both Chix teams.  If you wear a Christmas sweater, your admission fee is only $1.
